Savings tools: bonus checker and interest calculators

By Chris

Three small tools for the questions we hear most: will I get the Chip £50, what will my savings actually earn once a boost ends, and is ChipX worth paying for if I only save.

Each tool runs in your browser. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere, and none of them connects to Chip, your bank or a credit reference agency. They use the same published figures as the rest of this site, each one linked to its source and dated, so when a rate or a price changes the tools change with it.

Will I get the £50? The bonus checker

The Chip referral pays £50 to you and to us, but only if you have never held a Chip account before, deposit £1,000 into an eligible account and keep at least that much there for 90 days in a row. The Chip bonus checker asks five questions in the order that catches problems earliest.

The two that trip people up most are the account and the countdown. The Easy Access Saver does not count, even though it is a Chip savings account, and if your balance drops below £1,000 at any point, the 90-day countdown starts again from zero. If the honest answer is no, the checker says so and points you to something useful instead of to our link.

What will my savings earn? The interest calculator

Headline rates on savings apps usually include a boost that ends. Chip’s Instant Access pays 3.51% AER (variable tracker) for 12 months, then 3.00% AER, and the Smart Cash ISA pays 4.68% AER (variable tracker) for 12 months, then 3.50% AER. The savings interest calculator applies the boost for its real length and then drops to the standard rate, so an 18-month figure is not inflated.

It also shows rows for other apps, with a short note on each where the headline rate needs a paid plan, a second account or a bonus that can be lost. Premium Bonds are left out because they pay prizes, not interest. For the bigger picture, our best savings apps comparison covers withdrawals, protection and fees too.

Is ChipX worth it? The ChipX calculator

On the free Basic plan, each autosave costs 45p per autosave. ChipX costs £5.99 every 28 days or £65.05 a year and includes unlimited autosaves. The ChipX calculator turns your typical number of autosaves a month into a year’s cost on each plan and shows the break-even point.

It also reminds you of the third option: recurring deposits are free on both plans. If a fixed amount each week suits you, that costs nothing. Our guide to Chip autosave explains how it decides what to move.

Which tool to use first

If you have already decided on Chip, use the bonus checker first. It takes under a minute and tells you whether the referral can pay before you choose an account. Then use the interest calculator to compare Instant Access with the Smart Cash ISA on your own amount.

If you are still choosing where to save, start with the interest calculator, because it is the one tool that looks beyond Chip. It may well point you elsewhere, for example if you already bank with a provider whose paid plan you pay for anyway. The ChipX calculator is for later, once you know how often autosave moves money for you.

How we built these

Every Chip figure the tools use lives in one file on this site, with the page it came from and the date it was last checked, currently 16 October 2026. Nothing is typed into a tool by hand. Other providers’ rates come from their own pages and are linked on each tool page. Where a rate depends on a plan or a bonus condition, the tool says so on the row rather than hiding it.

We earn £50 when someone joins Chip through our link and qualifies. That is set out on how we make money, and it is why the bonus checker is built to say no when no is the honest answer. If you spot a figure that has changed, tell us and we will correct it and re-date the page.

Frequently asked questions

Are these savings tools free?

Yes. They run in your browser, need no sign-up and never ask for personal details. Nothing you type is stored or sent to us. The only thing recorded is an anonymous analytics event saying which kind of result was shown, never the numbers you entered.

Do the tools connect to Chip or my bank?

No. They use the published figures held on this site, each linked to the provider's own page and dated. They cannot see your accounts, and they cannot tell you what Chip or any other provider will decide about your application or your bonus.

How up to date are the rates in the calculators?

Chip's figures were last checked against Chip's own pages on 16 October 2026, and other providers' rates on 16 October 2026. Rates are variable and can change at any time, so treat every result as an estimate and check the provider's page before you move money.

Which tool should I use first?

If you are thinking of joining Chip through our link, start with the bonus checker, because it takes under a minute and tells you whether the referral can pay at all. If you are still choosing where to save, start with the interest calculator, which is the one that looks beyond Chip.

Do the calculators include tax?

No. Interest in a Cash ISA is not taxed. Interest outside an ISA may be taxable if it goes above your Personal Savings Allowance, which depends on your income tax band. The calculators show interest before any tax.
